Before Virgil Abloh was in his current role at Louis Vuitton as its men’s creative lead, that position was helmed by designer Kim Jones. Now working in a similar capacity with Dior Homme, Jones debuted his first collection with Dior during Paris Fashion Week. His friend, Abloh, was in attendance. Virgil wasn’t the only one though, whereas the packed celebrity stuffed house witnessed one of the best shows of the week with Jones’ spring/summer 2019 offering.

More intimately, Jones showcased a rousing footwear collection for Dior Homme. Widely varied with odes to traditional sneaker silhouettes and more modern interpretations, Jones’ foresight and ability to reshape classics through a contemporary lens played masterfully during his s/s ’19 presentation.

Removed from chunky runners and knit sock trainers — beloved styles though very circular in terms of revolving trends — the silhouettes are slimmed and refined, framed tighter and with a greater emphasis on definition. Also noted was a strong focus on layering and juxtaposition of materials and lines.

Jones, even with his triumphant past at Louis Vuitton, given a look at this new collection, may still have his best work ahead of him.
