We embark on an exhilarating journey into the world of Dream Ear, the talented producer who is making waves in the music industry. Today, we shine the spotlight on Dream Ear’s latest “West Side” single.
What was the catalyst for naming your production outfit Dream Ear?
Dream Ear is a play on the word dreamer (I know, super creative right?). Through elementary school day-dreaming was a daily retreat. When I began producing music in high school, I went by the name Dreamality (Dreams + Reality). It’s corny, I know. Don’t remind me. Once I entered into the music business and formed my first company with the city, I changed the name to Dream Ear Productions.
How did the “West Side” track come together? Anything interesting to share about the creation/studio process with FAB and Short?
First of all, let me say that I’ve wanted to work with Mistah F.A.B. since I was a teenager in the midst of the Hyphy Movement. Fab had this thing he would do where he would come freestyle with the kids at the community centers and Boys & Girls Clubs. I hadn’t pursued a professional relationship until I saw one of his Instagram posts offering verses. The week prior to his post, I had produced a track called World is Yours that I knew he’d be perfect for. The universe lined that shot up for ya boy. After World is Yours, I sent the West Side beat over to Fab. He mentioned being able to bring in Too $hort. Too $hort! The legend himself on one of MY creations?!! It was a no-brainer. I’m still pinching myself.

What’s the state of the Bay Area scene in 2023, and how do you feel you fit into it?
Bay Area Hip-Hop has always had an affinity to gangster music, loud speakers in the trunk, and dancing wherever you go. It’s easy to see why given the environment and all of the different walks of life that lead here. The real environment, not the stuff you see on the postcards and ‘Welcome to San Francisco’ IG pages. So what you’ll get a lot of is gangster/hood “slaps.” I don’t feel like I fit in, to be honest. Most people that hear my beats follow up by asking me if I’m from here lol. I like to blend styles and musical/theatrical components to create something that’ll take the listener on a journey out of the hood and not just through it.
This feels like a warning shot from Dream Ear. Where do you go from here?
It absolutely is. Dream Ear Productions as a company has been planning its assault on the music industry for years. West Side with Fab and $hort wasn’t just a bucket list item for me, but a tribute to home base and an announcement to the rest of the world that we’re here. We have a charcuterie board of different blends headed your way. Wait until you find out what a DreaMix is…
